Indo-US nuke deal to integrate India in global nuclear community
Mumbai, Jan 11 (UNI) The India-US civil nuclear deal needs to be viewed in proper perspective, not just as the conclusion of a bilateral agreement but the commencement of a process of integrating India in the global nuclear community, with implications that go far beyond what just the agreement's terms entail, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Senior Associate Ashley J Tellis here today said.
Mr Tellis was making a presentation at an interactive session on 'The Future of Indo-US Civil Nuclear Cooperation: Opportunities and Alternatives' organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
He said India's growing energy requirements and its pent-up demand for nuclear power, could be self-sufficiently attained, once the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal, was through. It would even open a plethora of opportunities in India, he added.
Terming the process as fulfillment of a promise made by the US President George Bush to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said CII played a major role in initiating the process.
