Historic 18th century Swedish ship to call at Chennai port

New Delhi, Jan 11 (UNI) The reconstructed 18th century Swedish Ship Gotheborg will call at Chennai Port on January 31.

One of the largest full-rigged wooden sailing ships in the world, Gotheborg would stay at Chennai Port till February 10.

The Ship has called on select countries across five Continents which include Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Indonesia and China.

The last port of call before arriving in Chennai is Singapore.

In connection with the visit to Chennai Port, Swedish business delegations representing various sectors including shipping, telecom, automotive and other important areas will visit different parts of the country.

One such deleagtion led by Swedish Ambassador Harald Falth today called on Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T R Baalu and informed him about the activities relating to the visit of the ship.

Mr Baalu appreciated the Swedish gesture of making this port of call by the historic ship and hoped that the two sides would further explore the areas of cooperation in shipping and port sector.

The Minister also informed the delegation about the setting up of a Maritime University in Chennai to improve the facilities of maritime education and research in the country.

Senior officials of the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways were also present on this occasion.
