Pak disturbances cause snowfall on upper reaches in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 10 (UNI) Westeran Disturbances from Pakistan finally brought relief to the people of Kashmir valley as upper reaches experienced snowfall following increase in the night and day temperature.

''We have experienced light snowfall at world famous tourist spot of Pahalgam and famed ski resort of Gulmarg last night,'' a weather office spokesman said.

He said the Western Disturbances (WD) finally entered the Kashmir valley from North Pakistan after about a week which brought some relief to people here.

He said there is no possibility of rain or snowfall when the maximum and maximum temperature dips to minus.

The minimum temperature during the night was recorded at minus 3.5 which was just one degree below normal. It was several degree below normal during the past one week resulting in severe cold. The parts of world famous Dal Lake were also partially frozen last week.

However, there was no report from any part of the Lake which says it was frozen today.

The spokesman said it was a warm day today with mercury touching to eleven degree which was six degree above normal.

He said there could be isolated rain or snow at few places in the Kashmir valley during the next few days.

Official sources said about six inches to one feet of fresh snowfall was experienced at holy Amarnath cave shrine and its periphery, Sheshnag, Mahaguns and Pisso top in south Kashmir.

The Khilanmarg, Afarwat and other adjoining hills also recorded light snowfall last evening.

The weather in the rest of the Kashmir valley, including Srinagar city remained dry.
