Husband gets 5 years RI for abetting wife to suicide
Mumbai, Jan 10 (UNI) A local court sentenced a man to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for abetting his wife to suicide in 1995.
Additional Sessions Judge W K Kanbaskar found Ramakant Laxman Gaurav (34) guilty of abetting the suicide of his wife Manisha (19) and awarded the punishment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 7,000. In default, he would have to undergo further imprisonment of nine months.
According to prosecution, Ramakant married Manisha on May 4, 1995, a Andheri-based working woman. There were frequent arguments between the couple as Ramakant doubted his wife's character since they married.
On the night of August 12, 1995, there was a fight between the couple and he beat Manisha. She narrated the whole episode to her parents, who consoled her and assured that they would meet Ramakant to resolve the matter amicably.
Next day, however, when Manisha's father reached her house found his daughter hanging from the ceiling fan. He immediately informed the Megwadi police station and a case was registered against his son-in-law under sections 306 and 498 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), prosecution added.
