Chandigarh, Jan 9 (UNI) There will be a marginal decline of about 85,000 voters in Punjab in comparison to the last assembly elections held in February 2002.

According to figures provided by the state election office to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Punjab with a population of 2.43 crore has 1.69 crore registered voters.

About 3.76 lakh voters who figured in the 2002 list had been deleted. Amongst the deleted voters, were 85,000 of those who had died, while the rest had migrated from areas where they were registered or to other states and even abroad.

In the run up to the revision of electoral rolls for the February 13 polls, 3.27 lakh applications were received by the electoral officers, of which 35,000 were rejected after objections were filed. Approximately about 2.92 lakh applications were accepted after verifications and registered as voters.

Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sundaram Krishan while giving an overview of the latest figures said the number of voters had remained more or less the same as the previous polls. '' If we take the shifting pattern within the state into consideration, the number of voters have remained more or less the same'', he added.
