Bangalore, Jan 9 (UNI) IBM today announced the creation of India/South Asia as its sixth and newest region in Asia Pacific, and ASEAN as a stand-alone region.

The newly-created India/South Asia region, which included Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, would be headed by Mr Shanker Annaswamy, the General Manager of IBM India since July 2004. In his new role as Regional General Manager of IBM India/South Asia, Mr Annaswamy would continue leading IBM's India operations in addition to his regional responsibilities and report to Mr Frank Kern, President of IBM Asia Pacific.

Other regions within IBM Asia Pacific were Australia/New Zealand, Greater China Group, Japan and Korea.

In June 2006, IBM Chairman, President and CEO Samuel J Palmisano announced an US Dollar six billion investment over the next three years in India, in the presence of President A P J Abdul Kalam. This signalled the importance the IT giant was placing on India, which had become one of the fastest growing businesses within the Corporation and a centre of excellence for global mission activities across the organisation.
