NRI gets compensation of Rs 1.65 crore in accident
New Delhi, Jan 8 (UNI) The Motor Accident Claim Tribunal today ordered National Insurance Company to pay Rs 1.65 crore as compensation to an NRI family for the death of its eight members in an accident at Peera Garhi in the capital in January, 1993.
ADJ Gurdeep Singh Saini describing the accident as exceptionally tragic, said ''A family travelling from across the seas to visit their motherland couldn't have met with a worse situation.'' The judge also criticised the transport authorities for the ''indiscriminate issuance of the driving licences''.
Travelling from his hometown in Punjab, Baljinder Singh had come to IGI airport in New Delhi to receive the NRI family coming from Canada on January 26, 1993.
Alighting later, the family boarded a vehicle. However, nine people including eight of the visiting family died on way back home in a road accident.
