Notorious robber gunned down in Kalol taluka

Ahmedabad, Jan 8 (UNI) A notorious criminal, Kasam Sumara was gunned down in an encounter with police in Kadi village of Kalol taluka early today.

Police sources said Sumara along with two other accomplices were spotted riding a motor-cycle by police at Katrak chowkdi near Jadi Narmada canal in the village. They were asked to surrender by Police Inspector V N Barot and Special Operations Group (SOG) PSI Patel.

However, Sumara opened fire. In the retaliatory firing, he received 12 bullet shots and died on the spot. His other two accomplices managed to escape.

A tamacha and several cartridges were recovered from Sumara's possession, police said.

Police said Sumara, who was trigger-happy and fond of shooting his victims, was involved in several robberies across the State.

They suspect his involvement in the recent robbery of Rs 46.5 lakh cash from Indian Bank officials at Anand. He was even involved in the loot of Rs 17 lakh at Kapadvanj in which one person was killed. In another incident involving an angadia, Rs 7 lakh was looted at Nadiad railway station and the police suspect his handiwork in the theft.

Sumara had 110 charges against him including 22 charges for murder and others for loot, assault and robbery. His network was well established in Porbandar, Junagadh, Rajkot and Jamnagar and was spreading to other areas, police added.
