LIC Sports Festival begins in Bhopal

Bhopal, Jan 8 (UNI) East Zone eves entered into semi-finals by beating their opponents in two group A Table Tennis team championship matches in the LIC Sports Festival 2006-07 that got underway at T T Nagar stadium here today.

In their first match, the East Zone defeated the Central Zone 3-1 followed by 3-0 win over the South Zone in their second tie. In another match, the Central Zone defeated the South Zone 3-0.

In group B matches, the West Zone rendered a performance matching their reputation defeating the South-Central Zone 3-1 and the North Zone 3-0. In another tie, the South-Central Zone defeated the North Zone 3-0.

In the men's badminton team championship matches, the South Zone made it double win and entered into semi-finals by defeating the North Zone 2-0 and the Central Zone 2-0.

In the event of Chess, international grandmaster Swati Ghate beat her opponent T Korta within half an hour. In the men's group, international masters Shriram Jha, Vishal Sarin, D K Sharma, Atanu Lahri and Anup Deshmukh won their matches and entered into next round.
