Karnataka proposes an SEZ for Aerospace near Bangalore

New Delhi, Jan 8 (UNI) The Karnataka Government has sent a proposal to the Centre for creating an Special Economic Zone for aerospace industry near Bangalore, state Major Industries Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu said today.

Talking to newspersons, the Minister said the location for the 900-odd acres of SEZ would be somewhere near Devanahalli where greenfield airport was coming up. Many international players had shown interest in setting up their plants and it would be a hub for manufacturing for aircraft components and other hardware requirements.

Bangalore is a natural choice for such an SEZ after having housed institutions like Indian Institute of Science, Indian Space Research Organisation, National Aeronautical Laboratory besides HAL, the manufactuerer of figher planes for the defence sector.

He said Karnataka by virtue of producing 50,000 odd technical graduates would be able to offer the manpower requirements just out of the engineering institutions.

Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board had developed five SEZs including two at Hassan one for pharmacy and biotechnology and the other one for food processing and agrobased industries. An IT SEZ was coming up at Mangalore and Multi Product SEZ at Shimoga. The state government had encouraged establishment of 23 SEZs in private sectors for specific sectors like IT/ITES which did not require much lands, apparel, biotechnology, hardware in various locations.

Answering questions, Mr Naidu said the state government would ensure that farmers were not inconvenienced by taking over of their lands for the SEZ. They will not only get high compensation but also get at least 25 per cent of land developed under SEZ.

Mr Naidu, who is here to address the Pravasi Bharatiya Conference to showcase Karnataka for NRI investments, said the state was the second biggest recipient of Foreign Direct Investment in the country and the exports from the state had grown at 31.5 per cent to touch Rs 82,279 crores for 2005-06.

The state government was doing much to improve air and road connectivity to aid industrial infrastructure. It was the first state to come out with its industrial policy during 1982-83 and the government had now come out with its new policy for 2006-2011. The aim was to achieve nine per cent growth of Gross State Domestic Product and 12 per cent industrial growth. The state wanted to reduce regional imbalances and create an additional 10 lakh employment for the next five years.

The focus sectors for the government were IT, BT, Pharmaceuticals, manufacturing maintenance and repair of aerospace, automobile and auto components, engineering and precision components, apparels, contract Research and Oil Refining and Petrochemicals.
