Congress demands dismissal of IG and DIG of Midnapore

Kolkata, Jan 8 (UNI) The West Bengal Pradesh Congress today demanded dismissal of Inspector General of police and the DIG of Midnapore range for death of seven people at Nandigram in East Midnapore.

A Congress delegation will call on Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee tomorrow and submit a memorandum demanding the dismissal of IG Arun Gupta and DIG N R Babu with immediate effect holding them responsible for death of seven people since Saturday, according to Opposition CLP leader of the assembly Manas Bhuiya.

These two police officers in collusion with CPI(M) goons were allegedly involved in the crimes at Nandigram and the chief minister should take action against them so that confidence among the people of Nandigram in particular and whole state in general was restored.

He demanded immediate suspension of the two IPS officer and then start the peace process of Nandigram.

PCC working president Pradip Bhattacharjee claimed over 5000 party workers across the state were arrested and many were injured in clashes with the police and the CPI(M) cadres.

The Congress also called a 12-hour bandh at "Kabitirtha constituency" in South Kolkata tomorrow to protest the arrest of local party MLA Ram Payare Ram and the police lathi charge on the "peaceful" procession led by Mr Ram.

The Congress also congratulated the people for "successful Bengal bandh" today. He said the bandh was total.
