BHEL bags Rs 380 crore contract from PSEB
Patiala, Jan 8 (UNI) The Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has bagged the order worth nearly Rs 380 crore for renovation and modernisation of 2x110 MW units (3&4) of Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant (GNDTP), The Punjab State Electricity Board, which has undertaken the major renovation and modernisation (R&M) work of the II&IV units of the GNDTP, placed the order with BHEL as it had given the lowest bid, Member Generation of PSEB H M Jain said.
The BHEL will also upgrade the units from their existing capacity of 110 MW to 120 MW each, which have completed their designed lifespan, to increase their lives by 15-20 years years, he said.
Mr Jain said the turnkey contract was for renovation, modernisation and upgrading of two thermal generating units of the GNDTP at Bhatinda. The plant will be modernised and renovated in another 28 months leading to increased availability and generation, besides life extension of the units by over 15 years.
All the four units of 110 MW capacity each, which were commissioned between 1974 to 1979, had outlived their designed lifespan of 25 years. Each of these four units had run 1,60,000 hours against designed life of 1,00,000 hours.
The first two units of the GNDTP had already been renovated and modernised at a cost of Rs 229 crore.
Under the renovation and modernisation exercise, the old boilers of each unit would be replaced with the boilers of modified design, new protection and monitoring systems would be provided, turbines would be modified and new electrostatic precipitator (ESP) field would be added, he said.
