AGP demands Gogoi's resignation on Law and order issue

Guwahati, Jan 8 (UNI) The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today demanded immediate resignation of Tarun Gogoi-led Asom government as it had 'totally failed' to protect the lives and properties of the people.

Condemning the killings of innocent people by ULFA militants in the state, the AGP said the people had lost their faith in the present state government and therefore, it had 'no right to be in power'.

AGP General Secretary Chandra Mohan Patowary told newspersons here today that people had voiced their opposition against the present government at Tinsukia, raising anti-government slogan in front of the visiting ministers.

''Mr Gogoi should resign owing moral responsibility,'' he said.

He alleged that both the Centre and the state government were not sincere to solve the present insurgency crisis in the state and wanted to keep alive the issue for their political gains.

He also criticised the Centre for deputing only one minister of state to visit the state after the ULFA massacre who had no power to promise anything to the people.

''Prime Minister Manmohan Singh represents Asom in Parliament and it is his moral duty to visit the state first after such an incident,'' Mr Patowary said.

He also stated that despite having a duly elected government in the state, ministers from Bihar accompanied with their police officials had to rush to Asom to control the law and order situation and pacify the people here which was 'most unfortunate'.

He demanded that the Prime Minister should visit the state immediately and announce policy to control the insurgency. ''AGP wants that violence should be stopped in the state,'' he said.

The AGP has decided to launch a 'protest demonstration' on January 11 against the state government's total failure on all front, specially on law and order issue in the state.
