Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, Jan 7 (UNI) Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Meira Kumar today said the UPA Government had taken steps to provide social justice to the poor, downtrodden and toiling masses in the country.

Addressing various meetings here yesterday, while unveiling the statue of her late father and former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram, she said the UPA Government Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh were taking steps to implement social justice to the poor people. Poor people should fight unitedly to protect their rights and get social justice, she added.

Ms Kumar said Mr Ram had sacrificed his life for the cause of poor people. The late leader had fought against untouchability in Bihar and strived to get justice to the poor people till his death.

The minister called upon the poor to take inspiration from the life of Mr Ram. Poor people should stand on their own legs for their education and should not depend or blame others for their upliftment, she added.
