Bhopal, Jan 7 (UNI) A grand Azad memorial would be built at freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad's birthplace in Bhabra in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh.

The memorial -- being built at a cost of Rs one crore -- will showcase writings and materials related to the life and personality of the freedom fighter.

Besides, a 10-day Azad Sandesh Yatra has started from Allahabad on January three to spread the message of Chandrashekhar Azad on the occasion of his birth centenary.

The 3000 km-yatra will pass through more than 20 districts and 60 towns and cities in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh before culminating at Azad's native Bhabhra village in Jhabua district. The yatra would reach the state capital on January nine, Convenor Anil Dave said.

The state government had also instituted an award in the freedom fighter's name this year.

Mr Dave said the Bundelkhand region where the Azad Yatra entered today was a witness to several incidents of valour and courage of Azad.

Azad had made his intentions clear when he was in his teenage and sentenced to beating by canes. On being asked to reply what was his name, address and father's name, he defiantly replied that his name was 'Azad' (free), his residence was the jail and his father's name was 'swatantrata (independence)'.
