CM inaugurates first phase of Pulse Polio in TN

Chennai, Jan 7 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today inaugurated the first phase of the Pulse Polio Programme (PPP) in Tamil Nadu by administering polio drops to a child at his Gopalapuram residence here.

The first phase of PPP will cover about 71 lakh children in the state.

Tamil Nadu Public Health (Immunisation) Joint Director Dr M Senthamilan told UNI they had established 40,400 booths for administering polio drops.

The polio drive would be on from 0700 hours to 1500 hours. About 1.80 lakh department and other staff were pressed into service, he added.

He said efforts were made to cover children, who were travelling as they had set up special booths at all important railway stations and bus terminals.

Since air travel had become common nowadays, for the first time , they had set up separate PPP camps at both the Kamaraj domestic airport and Anna International airport.

He said efforts would be made to administer polio drops to children under a door to door campaign all over Tamil Nadu for the next three days from tomorrow.

Similar campaigns and programmes would be launched on February 11, with the beginning of second phase of PPP in the state, he added.
