Parliamentary committee: Final touches to judges enquiry bill

Chennai, Jan 6 (UNI) The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice has given final shape to the proposed Judges Enquiry Bill, 2006.

Talking to the media here today, committee chairman and MP E M Sudharsana Nachiappan said they had collected opinions from law experts across the country and recommendations would be submitted to the Centre by February this year.

'It has also been proposed in the bill to set up a monitoring commitee to check the accountablity of High Court and Supreme court judges', he added.

Mr Nachiappan, who was here on a day's visit to discuss the status of the public grievances redress mechanism and policy of appointment on compassionate grounds, added that the Chief Election Commission had instructed the committee to seek expert opinion on amending existing laws to prevent criminals from contesting elections.

'Our committee members had gone across the country to seek various expert opinion to submit reports to the Centre', he said.
