Husband of dowry victim get 10-year RI

Moga, Jan 6: The local court convicted and sentenced a woman's husband and mother-in-law to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for torturung and killing her for dowry.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge B S Sandhu, relying upon the victim's dying declaration on thursday, convicted and sentenced both Malkiat Singh and his mother Harpal Kaur to ten-year RI for torturing Moorti Rani alias Ranjeet Kaur to bring more dowry and ultimately killed her by pouring kerosene oil while she was in kitchen on October 16, 2004.

According to the prosecution, Moorti Rani was married to Malkiat Singh, resident of Dhoorkot Charahat Singh Wala, about two years ago and her husband and mother-in-law Harpal Kaur used to continuously harass and beat her demanding more dowry.

On October 16, while she was in kitchen, her husband and mother-in-law began harassing her for bringing more dowry and then put her ablaze after pouring Kerosene oil.

Moorti Rani received serious burn injuries.

She was first taken to Moga civil hospital and then referred to Faridkot Medical College Hospital on October 20. A case was registered with Mehan police, She succumbed to her injuries on October 30 after her dying declaration was recorded by the executive magistrate.
