Four militant outfits protests Tipaimukh project
Imphal, Jan 6 (UNI) Four militant outfits of Manipur have threatened that they will not allow construction of Tipaimukh dam in Churachandpur district.
The organisations - kangleipak communist Party (KCP), Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL), People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and United National Liberation Front (UNLF), in a joint statement alleged that the government was in a process to destroy the state's natural resources.
The dam would not only affect the surrounding areas but the entire region, the statement said.
Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had laid the foundation stone of the dam on December 16, 2006.
The Tipaimukh project estimated to produce 1500 MW of power with six units of 250 MW each to be taken up by North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd (NEEPCO) had received some objections from the Action Committee Against Tipaimukh dam (ACTIP), Mizoram Bangladesh had also expressed its concerns on the project.
The project, to be taken up at the confluence of Tipaimukh and Tuivah rivers, would provide substantial flood protection to the Barak valley of Assam and help in socio-economic development of the area beside producing 3805 MUs of energy annually.
