Shimla, Jan 6: The newly elected president of the Himachal Pradesh BJP, Jai Ram Thakur, today asserted that the party was poised to win the next Assembly elections, due in February 2008.

''No power could stop the BJP from coming to power after the next Assembly elections since the count down of the present Congress Government had already began,'' he said at a press conference here.

Mr Thakur said the Congress, which had come to power during the 2003 Assembly elections on the plank of eradicating corruption, controlling price rise and providing employment to one member of every family, had failed to fulfill its promises.

''Corruption is rampant, prices are skyrocketing, number of unemployed people is multiplying and development works had come to a standstill.'' Observing that there were no factions within the party, he said the party was united under the guidance of experienced leaders like former Union Minister Shanta Kumar and former state Chief Minister P K Dhumal.

''There are no differences in the party. But in a democratic set up, there are bound to certain disagreements, which could be resolved through a dialogue process,'' he said.

The BJP Chief claimed that the state government was victimising employees sympathetic towards RSS by banning their participation in its activities and said the government's move was illegal.

''The RSS is a socio organisation and the government employees had a right to join any such organisation and take part in its activities,'' the BJP chief said. Mr Thakur said his party would revoke the ban and allow state government employees to take part in the activities of RSS or any other socio-cultural organisation after coming to power in the next Assembly elections.

Welcoming the passage of the Freedom of Religion Bill, which banned religious conversions by coercion, threat or allurement, he said a private member bill, seeking ban on conversions in the state was rejected by the state government on an earlier occasion.

Replying to a question whether he would contest next Assembly elections, he said it was for the party to decide and would abide by its decision.
