Spurt in crime by 4% in 2006 despite conviction shooting to 55%
New Delhi, Jan 5 (UNI) Even as crime shot up by nearly four per cent in the Capital in 2006, the Delhi Police gave a pat on its own back saying crime against senior citizens declined by 20 per cent and conviction touched an all time high of 55 per cent.
While there were 452 murder cases in 2006 as compared to 455 recorded in 2005 -- a drop of 0.66 per cent, 490 attempt to murder cases were reported in 2006 as compared to the 2005 figure of 467 -- an increase of nearly five per cent, said Police Commissioner K K Paul addressing media at the annual press conference this afternoon.
In rape cases, the number fell from 658 in 2005 to 599 in 2006 -- a drop of nearly nine per cent, as did robbery figures -- 510 to 506 (.8 per cent), while it remained the same for kidnapping for ransom (32 each in 2005 and 2006) and shot up by nearly 41 per cent in riot cases -- 61 (2005) and 87 (2006).
Dacoity cases also substantially declined to 14, taking 2005 figures of 27 into account, which was nearly 52 per cent.
Overall, a decline of nearly 1.4 per cent of the 2,179 total number of 'heinous crimes' committed in 2006 was registered as compared to 2005 figure of 2,210, while 'non-heinous crimes' showed a fall of 1.7 per cent from 53,855 in 2005 to 52,929 in 2006 and in total IPC crimes too, there was an equal percentage from 56,065 in 2005 to 55,108 in 2006.
