Six policemen dismissed from service following court verdict

Puducherry, Jan 5 (UNI) The Puducherry administration has dismissed six police personnel from service who were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Athiyur rape case.

According to police immediately after the Villupuram session court pronounced the judgement, the territorial administration sent a showcause notice to the policemen on why they should not be dismissed on the basis of the court judgement.

As their reply was not satisfactory, the six police personnel were dismissed from service and orders served to them on December 13. As they refused to accept it, the orders were then served to them on a later date.

The six policemen, who had filed an appeal in Madras High Court against the Villupuram court verdict were presently on bail.

The six police personnel, who went to Athiyur near Gingee in connection with a theft case allegedly outraged the modesty of a tribal girl in 1993.
