NHRC seeks comments to Delhi Govt on supply of filthy water to slums

New Delhi, Jan 5 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission has sought comments within four weeks from the Delhi Government on media report that water supplied to slum clusters and resettlement colonies in the city which is unfit for consumption.

Taking suo motu cognizance of the December 28 newspaper report, the Commission directed that copies of the article be sent to the Delhi Chief Secretary and Delhi Jal Board Chairman for comments.

After going through the contents of the report, NHRC said if true the issue is a serious violation of human rights of the citizens.

According to the report, a study carried out by an NGO, Hazard Centre, 92 per cent of water samples collected from five slum clusters and six resettlement colonies was filthy and had germs.

''Due to an alarming presence of a variety of pollutants including biological wastes, it is unfit for human consumption,'' it added.

The report said the same authorities provide better quality water to the areas where affluent people live.
