New Delhi, Jan 5 (UNI) Delhi Police Commissioner K K Paul today claimed there was an 18 per cent decline in complaints against police personnel last year compared to 2005.

Briefing mediapersons at the force's annual press conference here, he said enhanced vigilance and strict action against delinquents had ensured fewer complaints against police officers and men.

Complaints against police personnel had declined by 18 per cent while complaints lodged with the vigilance branch had declined by ten per cent, he added.

As many as 473 officers and men were placed under suspension on various charges. Departmental inquiry was also pending against an Additional Commissioner of Police.

Talking about road map for the future, Dr Paul said increased transparency, better responsiveness, close supervision and follow up of cases, development of scientific temper and modern outlook to policing while realising the centrality of the citizens and community would be the focus of attention.

''2006 saw a steep fall in the number of complaints against police. Our alternate complaints redressal mechanism also took off in a splendid manner, and is enjoying full support of the community,'' the Commissioner said.

''This narrowing of gap between the citizens and the police and growing confidence in our sincerity augured well and with enhanced efforts in this direction, Delhi Police is bound to reach its goal of becoming the best and the most modern force in the country,'' he added.
