Tribal students' bandh affect life in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 4 (UNI) The 24-hour strike called by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) in protest against the failure of the state government to fulfil the demands of tribal students' union, affected life here today.

The bandh, which began ast night, would continue till midnight.

The students had demanded that all backlog pending reservations for tribals should be completed. The ATSUM said the government had given 22 per cent normal reservation which was rejected by the Centre.

All bus services were cancelled in view of the bandh. However, banks and most shops in the state remained open. So far, no untoward incident has been reported.

The ATSUM has threatened to call an indefinite economic blockade on the NH 39 and the NH 53 from tomorrow onwards.

Meanwhile, the Jiribam district demand committee has called indefinite economic blockade on the NH 53 from today demanding district status for Jiribum sub-division.
