Rajkot Consumer Forum levies Rs 40,000 penalty on Reliance Infocomm

Rajkot, Jan 4 (UNI) A local consumer forum today ordered Reliance Infocomm to pay a penalty of Rs 40,000 to an eminent eye surgeon for default on its mobile service and its managing director or his advocate to be present on or before February 12 at the forum.

Dr Vasanthbhai Sapovadia had brought a Reliance mobile connection in 2003 by paying a deposit of Rs 23,000. The company gave him a Samsung mobile. Soon after there was always recurring connectivity problem. he gave several complaints in writing and then asked for a refund. All his pleas went unheeded. and on December 5, 2003 his mobile connection was disconnected. He then sent further letters to the company asking for refund of his deposit.

Finally he approached Mr M D Changlani, president of the Consumer Forum through his advocate and the forum in October 2006 ordered Reliance Infocomm to pay Dr Sapovadia Rs 25,000 with 12 per cent interest within three months from the issue of notice.

The forum, on the expirty of the three-month period, asked the MD of Reliance Infocomm or its advocate to be present on or before February 12 and pay a penalty of Rs 40,000 that includes interest, Rs 10,000 for mental agony and Rs 5,000 as advocate fees.
