New Delhi, Jan 4: Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL) today announced the opening of a new category three (CAT III) compliant rapid exit taxiway called B3 (Bravo 3) at the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

This new taxiway will facilitate the exit of aircraft from runway 10-28 on to the domestic apron and towards the additional CAT IIIB compliant parking stands being added, officials said.

The IGI Airport is the only airport in the country to operate a CAT IIIB instrument landing system. The system allows aircraft to land even when runway visibility is as poor as 50 meters.

According to GMR-DIAL, the opening of Bravo 3 will further improve the capacity of Delhi airport to handle CAT IIIB compliant aircraft in low visibility conditions as this taxiway facilitates a shorter travel time for the aircraft from runway to parking stands.

In addition DIAL has taken several steps to reduce inconvenience caused to passengers during delays caused by fog. As part of the preparation, DIAL held a series of meetings with various stakeholders such as airlines, air traffic control, the Central Industrial Security Force, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security, the met department, customs, immigration, Delhi Police and catering firms to assess the preparedness for fog season.

Based on discussions, several steps are being taken to try and minimise the impact on flight operations and inconvenience to passengers. A centralised emergency response and interactive centre was set up to coordinate operations during the fog season. In addition, a crisis management centre was also set-up to co-ordinate the efforts and manage any unforeseen events.

DIAL installed pre-fabricated tents to accommodate the overflow passengers. The tents are fire retardant and arrangements were made to provide tea and coffee available there. A free parking lot was also set up to cater to the extra rush of passengers.

A courtesy coach connects this parking lot with the terminals.

Seating in the terminals was augmented and extra trolleys were provided as well for the benefit of passengers.

DIAL is a joint venture company, consisting of GMR group, the Airports Authority of India, Fraport, Eraman Malaysia and India Development Fund. DIAL is working towards the modernisation and restructuring of Delhi airport.

DIAL has been given the mandate to operate, maintain, develop, design, construct, finance, upgrade and modernise Delhi airport.
