Naga govt orders stern action in Shamator

Kohima, Jan 4 (UNI) Nagaland Government has directed the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tuensang to take ''stern action'' to control the situation in Shamator where two Naga tribes were engaged in gun-battle since December 30.

Nagaland Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner T N Mannen yesterday sent an SOS message to the DC instructing him to urge the villagers to identify and being the miscreants before the authority, who were responsible for killing a policeman on January 1.

The directive further said that serious action would be taken against the villagers if they fail to comply with the authority orders. All civilians were also askedto deposit their firearms before the magistrate within 24 hours after the issuance of the directive.

The civilians have been till the situation improves barred from carrying unauthorized firearms in and around Shamator.

Any firearm found after the expiry of the deadline would be seized and appropriate action taken.

Tension ran high in the area following the declaration of the Yimchunger Students Union to hold their annual conference in Shamator, which was opposed by the Tikhir tribe this led to the gun battle in the area.
