Meghalaya police claims vital leads into explosion in the city

Shillong, Jan 4 (UNI) Meghalaya police today claimed to have gathered some ''vital clues'' in the Tuesday's bomb explosion in the city.

However, police are yet to get any lead in connection with yesterday's twin bomb blasts at Lad Rymbai in the Jaintia Hills district.

Four people were injured, one of them critically, when two unidentified youths hurled a crude bomb on a garment shop at Khyndai-Lad, the commercial hub of the city on the night of January 2.

Yesterday seven people were injured, one of them seriously, when miscreants lobbed a local-made bomb at a gambling centre here.

''We have got some vital clues in the bomb explosion inside the local garment shop,'' East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police A R Mawthoh told UNI here today.

Mr Mawthoh said investigation into the matter was going on in full swing and refused to elaborate.

Mr Mawthoh's counterpart in Jaintia Hills Mr H Nongpluh said the investigation into the matter was on.

''We are probing into the incident from all angles,'' Mr Nongpluh told this correspondent over the phone from Lad Rymbai.

Lad Rymbai, a coal belt area, is about 95 km from the state capital and known for its anti-social activities like gambling, trafficking of arms and women besides, the presence of illegal migrants.

Meanwhile, state's Director General of Police William Richmond Marbaniang said police were investigating a probable link between the incidents.

A special squad headed by a Superintendent of Police Ricky Dkhar, comprising bomb experts, had been set up to probe into the attacks, he said.

Chief Minister J D Rymbai today urged the people not to panic in the wake of the low-intensity blasts.

Mr Rymbai said he has instructed the police to remain alert to thwart such incidents in other parts of the state.

Meanwhile, former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP leader Purno A Sangma has condemned the blasts.

''The state government should be firm and quick to deal with the situation,'' Mr Sangma said.
