Israeli forces carry out operation in Ramallah

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Jan 4 (Reuters) Israeli forces carried out an operation in Ramallah today and two Palestinians were wounded as fierce gunfire rang out in the centre of the West Bank city, Palestinian security sources said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman in Tel Aviv had no immediate comment.

The Palestinian security sources said an Israeli helicopter poured machinegun fire into a building near Ramallah's central Manara Square. Television footage from the scene showed several Israeli armoured vehicles in the area and smoke rising.

Two Palestinians were wounded, the sources said, giving no further details.
