IIIT developing minuscule microchips under central project

Allahabad, Jan 4 (UNI) Days are not far when mobile phone processors would not be visible to human eyes, as their size would decrease with the evolution of microchips, courtesy the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT).

The institute has been entrusted by the central government to develop minuscule chips of 0.1 micron, against available 4.8 micron with a whopping budget of more than Rs 200 crore.

A communication to this effect was received from department of science and technology by IIIT recently.

''We have received communication for establishing state-of-art centre of micro-electronics at Amethi expected to cost Rs 200 crore following joint statement released during the visit of Union Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal to Switzerland,'' IIIT-Allahabad Director Murli Dhar Tiwari said here.

The ambitious endeavour would be core area of research to be carried out through the establishment of centre of micro-electronics with the support of Switzerland.

The aim of proposed Indo-Swiss centre of micro-electronics is to reduce the size of available microchips of 4.8 micron to 0.8-0.1 micron.

This would bring radical changes and revolution in the field of electronics as it would not only reduce the size of available electronic items like mobile phones and cameras, but augment and enhance their processing capacity and speed beyond imagination.
