UDF wins Palakkad Corpn vice-chairman post

Palakkad, Jan 3 (UNI) Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate M Khaja Hussain was today elected Vice-Chairman of the Palakkad Municipal Corporation in a triangular contest.

While Mr Hussain got 18 votes, the BJP candidate got 17 and Left Democratic Front (LDF) 15, in the election to the post.

The BJP candidate, who held the post of vice-chairman was removed through a no-confidence motion moved by the UDF with the support of the LDF on December 11 last and this necessitated the election.

In the 50-member Municipal Corporation the BJP had 17 members, while the UDF had 17, LDF 15 and the DIC(K) 1. However, with the lone DIC(K) candidate supporting the UDF, it got 18 votes to defeat the BJP candidate.
