Shillong, Jan 3 (UNI) Meghalaya police began probe into the last night blast in a local garment shop in Khyndai-lad here, the commercial centre of the state.

Four peoples were injured and one was critically wounded when two unidentified youths lobbed a local-made bomb into the shop, shattering Shillong, Meghalaya's capital.

The injured, Babla Modrani, Sankar Deb and Akil Ghosh, who were treated at Nazareth Hospital, were said to be in stable condition, hospital doctors said.

Condition of one Prasanta Bora was stated to be critical, they added.

So far, police have not been able to arrest the perpetrators nor have any militant groups claimed responsibility for the blast.

''We are still investigating the matter,'' Director General of Police William Richmond Marbaniang told UNI here today.

He said police would investigate the matter to confirm the reason behind the blast.

Mr Marbaniang said a team of Forensic Science Laboratory officials have collected the splinters of the bomb from the site of the occurrence for further analyses.

Urging people's cooperation to nab the perpetrators, the police chief asked the people of the state and tourists not to panic.

Terming the last night's incident 'unfortunate', state Home Minister Robert Garnet Lyngdoh said the incident should not be ''misconstrued'' that law and order has gone out of hand.

''Police have started investigation to find out the miscreants behind the incident,'' Mr Lyngdoh said.

Meanwhile, several political parties and social organisations condemned the blast and urged the people of the state to stand united to thwart such ''barbaric acts''.
