Chennai, Jan 3: A four-member German team which is on a world trip on a CNG-run Volkswagen Caddy arrived here with the aim of creating awareness on the advantages of using natural gas as fuel.

Talking to media here yesterday, Team Head Rainer Zietlow said the trip, which began on October 23 in Hanover, intended to demonstrate that alternative fuel concept was feasible and the technology was available globally.

''We are covering 45,000 km across five continents in an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. The journey will cover 75 metropolises in 40 countries,'' he said, adding during the course of the expedition, the vehicle would be filled with CNG at 32 natural gas stations across the globe.

Known for his altitude record for series vehicles, Mr Zietlow pointed out that for every kilometer it covered, the team would make a donation of 10 cents for poor children in Nepal.

Volskwagen Caddy EcoFeul's, in which the German team was travelling, has a 13-litre tank with optimised economic natural gas operation, which delivers 80 KW (109 PS).

Besides, the team will be able to cover approximately 2,500 km without having to refuel.
