Cyber Lab to train cops in Bangalore

Bangalore, Jan 3 (UNI) To effectively tackle increasing cyber crimes in the IT capital of the country, a Cyber Lab to train police and other enforcement officials was inaguruated at the Corps of Detectives headquarters here today.

In a public-private partnership, public sector Canara Bank, the Karnataka Police department and NASSCOM have jointly set up the lab, which would train 1,000 officials every year. The trained officers would be able to analyse and scrutinise data on hard disks, track e-mails, extract evidence using internet and mobile phones and cyber crime-related legislation.

Speaking on the occasion, DGP K R Srinivasan said Karnataka was the first State to introduce a Cyber Crime Police Station five years ago and the lab was critical for law enforcement officials to equip themselves to tackle cyber crimes in IT and BPO industry.

Canara Bank Chairman and Managing Director M B N Rao, who inaugurated the lab, said that with increasing number of crimes being reported in ATM and internet-based banking, it was important for the bankers to learn about cyber crimes. Unlike earlier, money had now taken the form of 'bits and bytes' and this called for bankers getting trained in IT.

NASSCOM Director for Cyber security and Compliance Nandakumar Sarvade said increase in use of IT in day-to-day lives had posed new challenges and threats. In addition to strengthening the legal infrastructure, creating an effective enforcement framework and awareness on impending threat of cyber crime was vital.
