Cop killed in inter-tribe clash at Shamator
Kohima, Jan 3 (UNI) A police constable was killed and three civilians were injured in a gun battle between two Naga tribes in Shamator near here yesterday, official sources today said.
The clash took place between the Tikhir Students Union (TSU) and the Yimchunger Students Union (YSU) following a month-long tension after the YSU declared to have their annual conference in Shamator.
Earlier, the TSU had opposed the move and gave a memorandum to the Tuensang Deputy Commissioner to not allow the YSU to hold the annual session, sources said.
Despite the heavy protests the YSU started preparations for the annual conference which resulted in the gun battle on December 30, sources added Police constable L Sangtam from Special Task Force was killed in the attack by some unidentified gunmen, police said.
The Deputy Commissioner and Tuensang Superintendent of Police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
However, tension is still running high .
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Range) has also rushed to the spot.
Meanwhile, senior citizens of Sangtam tribe in an emergency meeting at Kiphire have demanded an immediate inquiry into the whole matter.
