Chennai, Jan 3 (UNI) Chemplast Sanmar Ltd has earmarked Rs 100 crore for environment friendly measures in its chemical plant at Mettur for the year 2007.

According to an official release here today, the company had finalised an order with a US multi-national agency for supply of an advanced reverse osmosis treatment plant, evaporator and crystalliser at an investment of Rs 26 crore.

Chemplast had taken steps to install an effluent treatment process that would help its unit at Mettur to achieve the status of zero discharge of effluents.

Officials claimed this was customised technology for zero-discharge of effluents, which would be the first company in the country to apply the technique to the chemical industry and achieve zero discharge of effluents.

The company would also spend Rs four crore for the treatment of effluent water of around 2,000 kiloliters per day, arising in both PVC and chloro-chemical plant, that would be fully recycled and reused to conserve water.

For reducing energy consumption to the tune of 930 MW, Chemplast Sanmar would invest Rs 75 crore to convert the production of caustic soda at its plant from a mercury cell based to membrane cell based process.

This initiative would involve recurring maintenance costs for the company as membranes had to be intermittently replaced to maintain the efficiency of the plant, the release added.
