14-year-old swims to spread the message of women empowerment
Mumbai, Jan 3 (UNI) In an effort to spread the message of women empowerment across the country, 14-year old Aakansha Mishra of Vile Parle from the north western suburb of Mumbai began her 16-hour solo swim from the Gateway of India to Dharamtar in Alibag and back here today.
Talking to media persons at the Gateway of India, Aakansha said ''I want to spread the message that women in India are strong and determined to undertake any challenges. We as a country must educate girls with proper guidance.'' A student of class XII at the local Arya Vidya Mandir, Aakansha's tryst with sea swimming began at the tender age of four. She has swimmed for several competitions, including the Air India swimming competition.
According to Aakansha's coach Arti Pradhan, ''I saw immense talent and potential in her in the Air India swimming contest and therefore, decided to tap and train her into proffessional swimming.'' Supporting his daughter's endeavour, Rajesh Mishra expressed confidence in Aakansha that shw will swim across the English Channel. And in this regard, help will be sought from the Sports Authority of India and the Ministry of Sports.
Tomorrow Aakansha will swim back to the Gateway of India from Dharamtar finishing her non-stop 16-hour swim.
