2-day BARC golden jubilee festival ends on a colourful note

Mumbai, Jan 2 (UNI) As part of the year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), a two-day festival in association with Atomic Energy Education Society (AEES), came to an end today with AEES students showcasing their scientific talents.

The festival began here yesterday with the inauguration of an art exhibition at Atomic Energy Junior College by Dr Arvind Kumar, Director, Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.

The 'Golden Jubilee' celebrations saw numerous events such as seminars, award ceremonies and technical presentations across the country to commemorate the achievements of BARC as a premier research centre in the field of science, research and nuclear energy.

On the occassion, Atomic Energy Commission, Chairman, Dr Anil Kakodkar, who was the chief guest emphasised on the importance of human resource development for the next 50 years in the country.

In this regard, he mentioned the need of building innovative technologies, saying that education and research have to go hand in hand to achieve this objective.

Dr Arvind Gupta of Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, in his demonstration of 'Low Cost Teaching Aids' explained complicated phenomenon of Physics like electromagnetism and transmission of vibrations in simple and lucid way using junk materials like used refills of ball-pens, pencils, film boxes, cycle tubes, bathroom chappals etc.

He also demonstrated various geometrical shapes using paper folds and match sticks. Later, Dr Gupta inagurated an exhibition of prize winning projects of Science, Social Science, Mathematics and Teaching aids of AEES students and teachers.

In addition, students from various AEES institutions spread across the country not only showcased their scientific prowess but also presented cultural items in solo and group performances and a ballet based on contributions of BARC to the nation.

The Guest of Honour, Suyesha Kakodkar presented the medals and books to the participating students.
