Extremist violence declined in 2006: DGP
Hyderabad, Dec 30 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Swaranjeet Sen today said the extremist form of violence had declined in the state compared to last year.
Addressing newspersons here, Mr Sen said Maoist violence had declined considerably this year.
Stating that 136 extremists including one Maoist Central Committee Member and one state Secretary were neutralised, the DGP said a total of 717 extremists were arrested during this year.
He said as many as 320 Maoists, including the CPUSI State Committee Secretary, had surrendered during this year.
About 875 rockets, 27 rocket launchers, 100 pressure mines, 25 mortars, wireless sets and cash to the tune of Rs 1.39 crore were unearthed and seized from different districts in the state.
Mr Sen claimed that the entire state Maoist Committee was neutralised.
Regarding other criminal offences, the DGP said 1.60 lakh cognisable cases were reported during the year compared to 1.43 lakh cases in 2005.
As many as 2580 murders were reported in 2006 compared to 2547 in 2005.
Out of 7545 economic crime cases reported in 2006, 319 were related to counterfeit currency.
He said 17294 gender crime cases and 2174 SC /ST offence cases were reported in 2006.
About 42,569 road accidents were reported in 2006 in which 12,643 persons were killed and 48,600 injured.
Of the 29 communal crime cases reported in the state, 15 cases were from Hyderabad, three from Ranga Reddy and Nizamabad, two from Nalgonda and one each from Nellore, Chittor, Anantapur, Kurnool, Medak and Adilabad, Mr Sen added.
