Mayawati demands CBI probe in Kavita murder mystery

Lucknow, Dec 29 (UNI) BSP supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati today demanded CBI probe in the murder mystery of Meerut University lecturer Kavita Rani following alleged involvement of several ruling party leaders in the incident.

''Refusing CBI probe in the incident even after demand by Kavita's family proves that Mulayam Singh Yadav government is trying to save some ruling party leaders involved in the case through illegal means,'' Ms Mayawati said, promising that she would order CBI probe the day she takes over UP reigns after the 2007 assembly poll.

''I shall order CBI probe in several cases, including the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal,'' she said addressing a news conference here.

She mentioned that during her last regime, the state government had ordered CBI inquiry in the poet Madhumita Shukla murder case, in which BSP MLA Amarmani Tripathi was directly involved. ''I took only a day to order the CBI probe after the slain poet's family demanded in writing for the same.'' Earlier, a BSP delegation led by general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra submitted a memorandum to Governor T V Rajeswar demanding President's Rule in UP following ''deteriorating'' law and order situation and misrule.

In the memorandum, Ms Mayawati has referred to the ''Jungle Raj'' prevailing in Uttar Pradesh under the present regime and claimed that fair assembly election was only possible under Central rule.

Narrating the Kavita Rani murder case in the memorandum, the BSP leader asserted that instead of bringing truth to light, the state Police was making all efforts to save some ministers and other high profile people involved in the matter.

The delegation also gave a copy of the memorandum given to President A P J Abdul Kalam on December 8 demanding use of Article 356 of the Constitution in the state against the ''misrule.'' UNI MB VS PK DS1516
