Centre waives Rs 5000 cr loan given to Punjab govt

New Delhi, Dec 29 (UNI) The Center has waived the special term loan and accrued interests, totalling Rs 5000 crore, given to the Punjab government for combatting terrorism during militancy in the state from 1984 to 1994.

A proposal put up by the Ministry of Home Affairs to waive the loan was cleared by the Union Cabinet at its meeting yesterday, an official spokesman said.

The proposal comes in the backdrop of the fact that Punjab had to bore the brunt of militancy for about ten years.
