97 convicts given special remission in sentence on New Year Day

Chandigarh, Dec 29 (UNI) Chandigarh Union Territory Administrator General (Retd) S F Rodrigues granted special remission in sentence to 97 convicts on the occasion of New Year Day on January 1, 2007.

The remission has been awarded to encourage their good behaviour and get them into the mainstream.

The remission for the prisoners sentenced to imprisonment for more than ten years or for life will be one year. It will be eight months for prisoners undergoing sentence of more than five years and upto ten years, four months for those undergoing sentence of more than two years and upto five years and two months for those prisoners undergoing sentence of not more than two years.

The remission will not be awarded to the detainees of any class, convicts sentenced under the Foreigners Act and the Passport Act, Pakistan nationals and military personnel.

Prisoners undergoing imprisonment in rape cases will also not be eligible for remission in case of default of payment of fine.

Persons convicted under certain sections of the Official Secrets Act, the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act and the Indian Penal Code will also not be eligible.

Prisoners or those on parole, whose conduct has not been satisfactory, have also been debarred from the remission.
