Sensex opens high at 13,893,29 pts, up by 34 pts

Mumbai, Dec 28: The BSE Sensex today opened firm at 13,893.29 points with a handsome gain of 34.40 points from its last close of 13,859.69 points on tracking firm global markets and on the back of overnight gains in Indian ADRs, brokers said.

The Sensex was up 33 points at 13,892. Sensex rose as much as 100.70 points to a high of 13,960.39 by minutes of commencement of trade.

Reliance Communications rose 1.3 per cent to Rs 481. Infosys hiked 0.3 per cent to Rs 2,260. The Infy ADR rose 0.7 per cent on Wednesday to USD 54.72.

Satyam Computer lost 0.2 per cent to Rs 490.60. Satyam Computer ADR gained over 3 per cent on Wednesday to USD 24.09.

Wipro shed 0.3 per cent to Rs 605. On Wednesday, Wipro ADR rose nearly 2 per cent to USD 16.12.

ICICI Bank advanced 0.5 per cent to Rs 899.70 and HDFC Bank rose 0.4 per cent to Rs 1061. On Wednesday, ICICI Bank ADR rose 2.5 per cent to USD 41.32 and HDFC Bank ADR gained 3 per cent to USD 73.89.

Auto major Tata Motors rose nearly 1 per cent to Rs 915 after its ADR jumped 4.8 per cent on Wednesday to USD 20.83.

Major Asian markets were mostly positive on Thursday with Sydney hitting an all-time peak and Tokyo touching a seven-month peak before retreating.

US stocks staged a broad rally on Wednesday, with the Dow also ending at a record.

In the futures&options segment, December 2006 derivatives contracts expire today, brokers said.
