Next meeting on Common Wealth: Urban Development Ministry

New Delhi, Dec 28 (UNI) Preparedness for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi will come for discussion in the next meeting of the Consultative Committee of Parliament attached to the Urban Development Ministry.

The Consultative Committee of the Ministry which met today received a suggestion by Congress MP Sajjan Kumar to keep the Commonwealth Games on the agenda for the next meeting which was immediately accepted by Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy.

The Delhi Government and the Sports Authority of India were involved in the building up infrastructure and other amenities for holding the Commonwealth Games in 2010. The actual work was being done by the Central Public Works Department and the Delhi Development Authority.

Another proposal mooted by another Congress MP Abhishek Singhvi was also accepted for consideration by Mr Reddy to have an Open City Centre Plaza and pedestrianising designated area in identified cities in the country.

Mr Singhvi, while giving the idea, had pointed out that most towns or state capitals have a history and heritage and were in dilapidated or decayed condition because of lack of resources. A pilot scheme on this line might be taken up by the Urban Development Ministry in about 20 towns, he said.

Former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler suggested that the Ministry should encourage service sectors like Information Technology in Delhi to provide jobs. Responding to it, Mr Reddy said that it would be considered while finalising the Delhi Master Plan 2021.

A proposal was also put forward to give an ethnic look to buildings in the region, official sources said.
