Meghalaya experiences coldest day of the month

Shillong, Dec 28 (UNI) Shillong experienced the coldest day of the month today, with the minimum temperature dropping to 4.9 degree Celsius, metrological officials said here.

The sudden dip of mercury and the dense fog gave the entire city a deserted look, as most of the people prefered to stay indoors.

Some of the shop owners in the commercial centres at Kyndai-lad and Laitumkrah have even put their shutters down.

''It's very cold today so we prefer to stay indoors,'' Julian Blah said, who have to cancel his plans to take out his children for dinner this evening.

However, liquor shops are doing a brisk business with people buying wine.

According to the Met office, the cold wave is likely to continue for another two to three days. Further fall in the temperature is also predicted.

Meanwhile, an earthquake of light intensity shook Shillong today.

The tremor, having a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale, occurred at 0229 hrs (IST) with its epicentre about 25 km away from Central Seismological Observatory (CSO) at Upper Shillong, CSO officials told UNI here.

However, there was no report of any loss of life and property.
