CPI urges to review SEZ Acts
Tirupati, Dec 28 (UNI) CPI leader S Sudhakar Reddy today said a three-member empowered committee led by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee was constituted to review the SEZ Acts.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr Reddy said the committee will meet in January and review various issues related to SEZ, including IT concession and acquiring the lands for the project.
He said only non-agricultural land should be acquired for the project as acquiring agricultural land would affect the food security in the country.
Even without SEZ in the country, exports had increased during November 2006 and the FDI also increased by 57 per cent, he said.
He said of the 3,000 SEZ in the world, 400 were coming up in India. The government had sanctioned 67 SEZs, where activities were going on while the remaining are under process for clearance, he added.
