Chennai, Dec 28 (UNI) Four camels have been brought to the city from Rajasthan for allegedly slaughtering it for its meat, as an Animal Welfare Organisation is objecting to it.

The camels were housed in a place at Mannady in North Chennai and some functionaries, owing allegiance to Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam Kazhagam, had put up advertisements that the camel meat would be available at a cost of Rs 3,500 per kg.

The camels were brought for the annual Al-Great Qurbani.

The NGO Karuna Club, claimed that the camels were brought for slaughtering for Bakrid festival on January 1 and had appealed to the state government and the Police to ensure that it was not slaughtered.

Police sources told UNI yesterday that no ban was in force for slaughtering of camels in the city.

Similarly last year also camels were brought for slaughter, prompting filing of a PIL in the High Court. However, the Court refused to intervene and qurbani was done and meat distributed.
