SHG women picket police station following death of girl

Puducherry,Dec 27(UNI) Alleging suspecion in the death of a newly wedded girl from their village, over one hundred women from several Self Help Groups(SHG) of Kirumambakkam today picketed the all women police station here.

Maheswari(30) of Kuravallimedu near Kirumambakkam was married to Anbazhagan of Mettuppalayam. The couple went to Kirumambakkam on Christmas and were sitting on the Moorthipudukuppam beach and chatting. After some time, Anbazhagan returned to her house and said that Maheswari, who went for a bath in the sea, was drowned. Her relatives rushed to the seashore and found the body of Maheswari.

Narayanan, brother of Maheswari preferred a complaint with the Kirumambakkam police and the police had reportedly not initiated any action on the complaint. Meanwhile the SHG women led by Maheswari's mother Padmavathi and Narayanan picketed the police station. They demanded that a thorough enquiry into the death be conducted, since there was no possibility of Maheswari being drowned in the sea.

Anbazhagan and his mother were torturing Maheswari ,they alleged.

The Superintendent of police (Rural) Balla Hanumalla on hearing the news rushed to the spot and assured them to initiate stern action, following which they dispersed.
