Mizo-Jewish fighting for Israel in Lebanon

Aizawl, Dec 27 (UNI) The Mizo-Jewish community, which recently returned to Israel from the state, are serving the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) in Lebanon.

Sources in close contact with the Bnei Menashe clan in Israel said here today that nine soldiers, all members of the Bnei Menashe clan of Mizoram, have been deployed in Lebanon.

At least 218 Mizo-Jewish people from the clan migrated last month to Israel, after completing their conversion under their Chief Rabbinate six months ago.

The migrant Mizo-Jewish were also attending community centres, established by Shavei in Israel, to learn the Bnei Menashe Jewish tradition and modern Hebrew, sources said.

In 1950s, several thousands of clan members had migrated from Israel. Thousands of Bnei Menashe members have gone to Israel from India in last few years and settled in Gush Katif area, sources added.
